5 stars
From a steep slope at Lowburn, in the Cromwell Basin, this youthful red was matured for 10 months in French oak casks (25 per cent new).  Full, bright ruby, it is mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, with generous cherry, plum and spice flavours, finely integrated oak adding complexity, and ripe, supple tannins.  A very graceful red with obvious potential for cellaring, it needs time; best drinking 2026+.

Richly fruited yet elegant and refined, the wine shows dark cherry, thyme, warm spice and hazelnut aromas on the nose. The palate displays excellent weight and fleshy texture, wonderfully framed by layers of silky tannins. Complex and harmonious with loads of delicious flavours, finishing impressively long and velvety. At its best: 2025 to 2037.

Tasting Notes

A very rare native bird of NZ the Tūturuatu or Shore Plover, with only 250 adult birds left, needs your help. Please assist by enjoying this very limited edition of Pinot Noir, a collaboration effort between HAWKSHEAD, Kinross and the NZ Nature Fund to safeguard this species from extinction. Let’s give the Tūturuatu a chance, a win-win for all.

The grapes for this Pinot Noir hail from a sunny steep slope at Lowburn on the western banks of Lake Dunstan. The gravelly fast-draining schist soils and diurnal temperatures during the last month of ripening created this fine wine with its rich balanced fruit flavours whilst retaining a vein of refreshing Central Otago fruit acidity. The 2023 HAWKSHEAD Lowburn ‘Shore Plover’ Pinot Noir, is an honest portrayal of this terroir with a beautiful medley of spicy Blackcurrant, Doris Plum and violet floral aromatics. The aromatics give way to a warm concentrated palate, showing elegance, balance and depth.
